Formats & render passes

Get a ready-to-use PNG for the slide deck and a multi-pass EXR for the compositor from the same render. Every adjustment made later starts from real scene data.

Choose what each render delivers

Pick a file format for the audience, then add the passes that make later changes quick and precise.

Image formats

PNG at 8 or 16 bits per channel, JPEG for lightweight sharing, and floating-point OpenEXR for compositing.

Transparent backgrounds

Render the product over alpha to PNG or EXR so it can be placed on any slide, web page or layout.

Geometry and data passes

Depth, Normal, Position, Velocity for motion vectors, UV, Mist and ambient occlusion.

Selection masks

Object ID and Material ID passes isolate a part or a finish. Diffuse colour and Glossy colour passes separate the base colour from reflections.

Light and caustic passes

Get one pass for each light group you create so you can rebalance lights after rendering. A Caustic pass separates the focused light from glass and metal.

EXR delivery and motion

Write all passes into one multi-part EXR, or one labelled file per pass. Animation always produces an image sequence. With FFmpeg installed, you can also get an MP4 or a looping GIF.

Example: a stand mixer for a retail campaign

Marketing asks for the mixer on transparent backgrounds, plus the option to change the bowl colour and soften the rim light late in the schedule. The designer renders one EXR with Material ID, light group and Depth passes. In the compositor, the Material ID mask isolates the bowl for recolouring. The rim light group is turned down, and the Depth pass adds a gentle haze to the background, all without going back to 3D. A matching PNG with alpha goes straight into the deck.

A practical workflow

  1. Choose PNG or JPEG for direct use, or EXR for compositing.
  2. Turn on a transparent background if the product will be placed on a layout.
  3. Add the passes your compositing plan needs, and set up light groups before rendering.
  4. Choose one multi-part EXR or separate pass files, then render.

EXR files that include extra passes are written without the display look, ready for grading in your compositing application. MP4 and GIF output requires FFmpeg, installed separately.
