After Effects compositions

Put motion graphics on a product's screen and pull rendered frames and passes straight into After Effects. The VIZid After Effects plug-in links the two applications in both directions.

What moves between VIZid Next and After Effects

The VIZid After Effects plug-in adds a VIZid Bridge panel and a render-layer effect to After Effects, so you can work in each application without exporting files back and forth.

Rendered frames in your comp

The VIZid Render Layer effect brings in the VIZid Next frame for the current comp time. It works in the viewer, in previews and in render-queue output, and quality can follow the context or stay on preview or final.

Passes on their own layers

Bring in Combined, Depth, Normal, Position, Motion Vector, UV, Object ID, Material ID, Light Group and Caustic passes as separate layers. The data passes need a 32-bit-per-channel project.

Camera and parts for tracking

Bake the VIZid Next camera to a keyed After Effects camera layer, and bring product parts in as 3D null objects so callouts and graphics follow the product.

Comps on product screens

Send a linked composition to VIZid Next as an overlay, an underlay or a texture on a screen in the scene, so a UI animation plays on the display of the device.

Comps on the VIZid Next timeline

A linked comp appears as a clip on the VIZid Next timeline. Drag it to change when it starts, or trim its ends, without re-timing the animation inside it.

Pre-rendered comps

For heavy compositions, VIZid Next can use frames that After Effects has already rendered to disk.

Example: a smart thermostat launch film

The motion designer builds the dial's interface animation in After Effects. It plays on the thermostat's glass face inside VIZid Next, lit and reflected like the rest of the product, while the designer adjusts the housing finish. Back in After Effects, the baked camera and part nulls let the product callouts track the dial, and the Object ID pass isolates the bezel for a final colour tweak.

A practical workflow

  1. Install the VIZid After Effects plug-in and open the VIZid Bridge panel from the Window menu.
  2. Link the interface comp and assign it to the product's screen in VIZid Next.
  3. Set up the shot and camera move in VIZid Next and bake the camera to After Effects.
  4. Add the VIZid Render Layer and any passes you need, then render from the After Effects render queue.

Requires a compatible Windows version of Adobe After Effects with its own licence. Contact us to confirm the versions supported by your release.
