AI-generated backdrops

Describe a setting in a sentence and explore it around your rendered product. Generate the surroundings while keeping the product's rendered appearance.

A setting built around the render

The AI Backdrop section of the Compositor generates only the surroundings. The model sees your render and builds the scene around the product. It never paints over the product.

Prompt and Avoid

Describe where the product is, such as "a walnut desk by a window", and list what to keep out, such as text, logos or people. Some models ignore the Avoid list.

Repeatable results

Leave the seed empty for a fresh backdrop each time, or set and lock a seed to reproduce one you like. The seed used is saved with the generated plate.

Product pixels stay true

Your materials, reflections and details are exactly as rendered, so the finish your team approved is the finish in the image.

Becomes your backplate

Keep a generated backdrop as the document's backplate. It receives ground shadows and carries through to final renders.

Switch without losing work

The AI Backdrop background mode sits alongside your own backplate photo. Switch between the two at any time without losing either.

Runs on your computer

Generation runs locally on your workstation. Choose from several downloadable models with different graphics-memory needs and licence terms.

Example: a coffee grinder for a pitch deck

Before any location photography is booked, the design team wants to see the new grinder in a few settings. The designer renders the grinder, then generates "a marble kitchen counter, morning light", "a café bar with brass fittings" and "a minimal concrete shelf". They lock the seed of the counter they prefer, then keep refining the grinder's burr-housing finish while the backdrop stays the same. Each slide shows the real rendered product, not a painted impression of it.

Generated backdrops set the scene; they do not light the product. Keep lighting the product with the environment and studio lights so it matches the setting you choose.

A practical workflow

  1. Install the AI engine and a backdrop model from Settings.
  2. Set the Environment background to Backplate, and hide anything that should not appear.
  3. Write a prompt describing the setting, and add anything to avoid.
  4. Generate backdrops, lock the seed you prefer, and keep the one you want as the backplate.

Requires AI engine and model setup, suitable hardware and applicable model terms. Generated backgrounds do not replace the lighting setup for the product.
